Music at St Philip & St James', Leckhampton, Cheltenham The choir leads the singing at most of the 10am and 6pm services; the music group leads at the 10am service on the first Sunday in the month, when the choir assist. New members for either, or both, are always welcome. The choir Highlights of the choral year at St Philip and St James' include the Advent Carol Service, the Christmas service of Nine Lessons and Carols, the Palm Sunday Devotion, and occasional sung masses on All Saints' Day or Ascension Day. In recent years the choir has sung Schubert's Mass in G, Faure's Requiem Stainer's Crucifixion and Mozart's Coronation Mass. It is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, and recently recorded a CD, O sing joyfully, which is being sold from the Church Office. The choir also sings at weddings and funerals, by arrangement. Choir practice is on Fridays from 7.30pm to around 8.45pm. Currently all our singers are adults, but girls and boys can join at any age from 7 years. Social events include walks, meals, skittles matches and visits to local pubs. The music group The music group consists of singers and a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, violin, flute, saxophone and cello. The group practices once a month, between 7pm and 7.45pm on the Friday before the first Sunday in the month. On the Sunday, the group performs some well-known modern songs and hymns before the 10am service starts, and also plays some hymns during the service, particularly during Communion. The group has a repertoire of about 120 songs and hymns and, if asked, will play at weddings and other celebrations. Any singer or musician, young or old is welcome to join the group.
